The campaign to see independent nationalist Councillor Malachy Steenson elected in Dublin Central has been boosted this week following the ringing endorsement of former Lord Mayor of Dublin Niall Ring.

Media attention is fixated on the north inner city in the final days before Friday’s general election as Councillor Steenson bids to become the first assertive nationalist elected to Dáil Éireann in the electoral back garden of SF leader Mary Lou MacDonald.

Longtime political figure active in the inner city, Ring commended Steenson for his work in Dublin City Council less than six months into the job adding that he would be a “major addition to the Dáil” should he be elected.

Running against left-wing populist Clare Daly and alleged-crimelord turned local hero Gerry “the Monk” Hutch, among heavyweights like Mary-Lou McDonald and Paschal Donoghue, Steenon’s rise in local and city politics is seen as a bellwether for changing attitudes to mass migration in Dublin with the Irish Times indicating that the nationalist councillor could clinch the final seat on offer.

An accomplished barrister, republican activist and coming to media prominence during the outbreak of local protests over the East Wall asylum centre, Steenson has been active daily since the start of the general election campaign promising to bring the topic of immigration to the forefront of Oireachtas politics if elected.
