No sooner than the ink was dry on a ministerial order enabling the Department of Integration and An Garda Siochána to brush aside a community picket were the wheels set in motion to turn the 67-hectare greenfield into a custom-built tent city for international protection applicants.
The first of six planned refugee mega-centres to accommodate eye-watering rates of asylum applicants as well as to prevent the prospect of refugee encampments becoming a fixed feature along Dublin’s canals, the public order unit moved in to secure the site Wednesday last with military precision.
Despite fears from even regime councillors that the would-be site of a new prison complex mothballed in 2019, contractors are now on site at Thornton Hall, where up to 13,000 male, primarily non-Ukranian asylum seekers, could likely be dumped over the coming years.
Almost as if to rub salt in the wounds of locals, the Garda press office had just that week downplayed fears of right-wing “misinformation,” alleging that the force was working to bus in asylum seekers without proper consultation.
Downplayed as an ‘emergency response’ to a diminishing amount of supply for shuttered hotels and other units such as office blocks, Sword locals now face the prospect of male refugees being shipped in late next month despite a lack of basic sanitation facilities.
Both garda sources and media organs had attempted to discredit local protests with trumped-up charges of potential violence as one local woman was arrested and handcuffed for opposing the site’s installation in her community.
Green Party councillor Ian Carey was quick off the mark in attempting to diffuse community tensions by directing concerns towards NIMBYism as well as mere logistical worries about an already overburdened transport infrastructure as contractors moved to develop Thornton Hall in the hopes of eventually building permanent modular housing.
In many respects Thornton Hall is another escalation in a state-enforced asylum policy fast running out of road even with gombeen developers fearful of similar scenes as were witnessed in Coolock. Originally earmarked as a potential replacement or at least overflow for Mountjoy, the multi-million euro site in a saner society would have made an ideal greenfield site for family housing.
Relatively discrete megacentres to take pressure off sequestered living space at local hotels is now seen as a preferred poison for IPAS in line with a wider shift in the Department of Integration announced in March.
Thornton’s approximate location to Dublin Airport as well as to the city centre makes it a good conduit to transfer asylum seekers clogging up the capital’s streets, as the Department of Integration hinted that there was no current cap on the number of male refugees to be placed at the site.
As always, local communities will pay the price of Ireland’s open border fanaticism with the social blight Thornton Hall will cause beyond monetary estimation if the asylum factory is allowed to fully bed down in Swords or Ashbourne.
The sad reality is that Somali squatters and Georgian down-and-outs are coming to the northside a lot sooner than a Dublin Metro under this current government.
I don’t know what’s wrong with the Great Blasket. It’s uninhabited and big enough to house a huge number of “protection seekers.”
If we can, legally, make the politicians more afraid of us than they are afraid of their “mysterious” paymasters, they will u-turn…. I wonder who is paying – or blackmailing – them to do this? Who could it possibly be? Who indeed?
At least it is OK to talk about mass deportations and remigration now: even the politicians are talking about it.
The other thing that is changing is that the feminists are split: the reports of rape of European women by foreigners are so widespread now, they cannot be ignored.
One thing we should keep repeating is: show me an honest refugee (bona fide Palestinians excepted) in Ireland. There isn’t one! Not one. Effectively, every single person here claiming to be a refugee is a liar. And we have enough ethnic Irish liars, we don’t need to import them from abroad.

Stationing Gardai @ the border to check on busses & trains for would be asylum applicants has been quietly dropped , as the majority arrive in Mount Street via taxi / private car . Besides , how do you patrol a 300 mile land border ?
Asylum applications will trend towards 1,000 per week by late autumn , a similar number to what the 6 million population of Denmark will receive for the entirety of 2024 .
We could stage some colourful, cross community, non-sectarian, peaceful, legal protests on the Border, with the slogan: Open for locals, closed for dodgy foreigners. Maybe some of our new friends in the Loyalist community will come and join us?
Depending which set of cops turn up first, we can just skip over to the other side of the border.
Probably unlikely that any cops would arrive: they have enough to do, and they have no enthusiasm for the fake refugees.
As long as we don’t drag any darkies out of their cars, and we do act politely, peacefully and legally, we should be fine. The cops will be too busy arresting grannies in Thornton Hall and Greystones to bother with us at the Border.
